The ViPrimePLUS Mycoplasma haemofelis and haemocanis qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Mycoplasma haemofelis and Mycoplasma haemocanisgenome in conjunctiva and blood samples.
Mycoplasmas are Gram negative microorganisms that have been isolated from many animal species. M. haemofelis, previously known as Haemobartonella felis, infects cats while M. haemocanisinfects dogs, causing massive bacteremia of red blood cells that eventually leads to severe haemolytic anaemia. Both parasites are very similar genetically. They are predominantly transmitted via fleas and ticks bites. Clinical signs include anorexia, depression, lethargy, weakness, fever and weight loss. M. felis infected cats may remain a life-long carrier and infection can re-emerged through stress or immunosuppression. Similarly to M. haemocanis infected dogs where they will be long term carriers, however, symptoms will only recur in immunocompromised animals or after splenectomy.
