Description The ViPrimePLUS Feline Herpesvirus qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Feline Herpesvirus genome in nasal, oral and ocular swab samples. Feline Herpesvirus (FHV) is a double stranded DNA virus that causes upper respiratory disease and eye inflammation in cats. The disease is usually self-limiting. There is only serotype of the virus and most of the cats are exposed to the virus during their lifetime. The primary transmission is via direct contact with eye, nose and mouth secretion of the infected cats. Indirect transmission is possible, too as the virus can survive outside of living host for up to 18 hours. Symptoms of the infection include depression, loss of appetite, fever, sneezing, nasal and ocular discharge, rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Infection in young kittens can be fatal and may cause blindness. Most of the infected cats continue to be the latent carriers after recovery. During this period of dormancy, the virus will reside in the nerve tissue and is not infectious. Upon reactivation due to stress or treatment with corticosteroids, these cats may start to shed the virus and suffer from the recurrent symptoms. Topical antiviral drugs may be applied to treat acute FHV ocular disease and vaccination is available. ViPrimePLUS Feline Herpesvirus qPCR Kit is intended for research use only.
