Description
The ViPrimePLUS Streptococcus pneumoniae qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae genomes in clinical samples (e.g. throat swab, cerebrospinal fluids and blood).
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram positive, alpha-hemolytic streptococcal bacterium. It has more than 91 serotypes, where only several cause disease in human. S. pneumoniae and S. viridans are distinguished with opthocin test where the former is sensitive to opthocin. Currently, S. pneumoniae is the leading cause of pneumonia, other than Haemophilus influenzae type b. About 1.2 million child deaths are recorded each year due to pneumonia. Young children, elderly, immunocompromised patients and people with chronic medical conditions, are more susceptible to the pneumococcal pneumonia. Besides that, S. pneumoniae is also the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in *****s and children. Mode of transmission is via contact with respiratory droplets. Vaccines have been developed to prevent the pneumococcal disease.
