An enzyme immunoassay for the quantitation of mannan-binding lectin present in human serum and plasma.
Mannan-binding lectin (MBL: also called mannose-binding lectin or protein) is a multimeric carbohydrate-binding protein produced in the liver and secreted into the blood, where it constitutes an important element in innate immune defense against invading microorganisms. Its normally oligomerized forms are associated with specific serine proteases (the MASPs) which are activated when MBL binds to microbial carbohydrate surfaces and in turn activate complement via the MBL or lectin pathway.
