Description The ViPrimePLUS Feline Immunodeficiency Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus genome in blood, saliva and cerebrospinal fluid samples. Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a retrovirus of the Lentivirus genus which infects cats and causes illness similar to human AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). Although related, Lentivirus infections are known for being species-specific and for slow disease progression. Therefore neither is FIV transmissible to humans, nor HIV transmissible to cats. FIV is often found in cats that are positive with feline leukaemia virus. FIV are present in the blood, saliva and cerebrospinal fluids. Thus, the mode of transmission is via cat bites or from pregnant female cats to their unborn kittens. Obvious clinical signs do not appear for many years starting with fever, lymph node enlargement, weight loss and probably tumour growth. As the slow depression of immune system takes place, it leads to chronic health problems and opportunistic infections in later years. Diarrhoea, pneumonia, skin disease, sinuses and eye diseases are common in the infected cats. Treatments are provided to cope with the secondary diseases. ViPrimePLUS Feline Immunodeficiency Virus RT-qPCR Kit is intended for research use only.
