Heparin-Binding Peptides are derived from laminin isoforms, von Willebrand factor, vitronectin, protein C inhibitor, and fibronectin. They exert antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Heparin-Binding Peptides, can interact with cell surface glycosaminoglycans, and can be used with a defined medium to culture human embryonic stem (hES) cells. Heparin is found exclusively in mast cells and the physiological ligand for various heparin-binding peptides in vivo is most likely DS or heparan sulphate.
