Function: Responsible for the deiodination of T4 (3,5,3',5'-tetraiodothyronine) into T3 (3,5,3'-triiodothyronine). Essential for providing the brain with appropriate levels of T3 during the critical period of development.
Tissue Specificity: Expressed in mammary gland and in brain.
Sequence Similarities: Belongs to the iodothyronine deiodinase family.
Post-Translational Modification: Ubiquitinated by MARCH6, leading to its degradation by the proteasome. Deubiquitinated by USP20 and USP33 (By similarity).
Cellular Location: Membrane.
