Human Alpha 1 Acid Glycoprotein is an acute phase protein. Reduced serum human alpha 1 acid glycoprotein levels are mainly associated with impaired liver function but can also occur in vitamin A deficiency and conditions in which protein is being lost from the blood. Human alpha 1 acid glycoprotein (a1AG) (AGP) increased level (in parallel to increases in haptoglobin) is suggestive of inflammation. Human alpha 1 acid glycoprotein (a1AG) (AGP) levels rise before those of haptoglobin therefore this test can be useful in determining the chronology of inflammatory processes.
